SACRAMENTO (RPT) - A new study of online dating has found that men actually prefer women who “can’t make them laugh” over women who are funny. The researchers analyzed 87,500 dating profiles and discovered that 68% of men expressed preferences for women who aren’t funny over women with an excellent sense of humor who can make them laugh. This confirmed the researchers hypothesis that men have been sexually selected to feel threatened by women who are funnier than they are.
In follow up interviews, the researchers found that men believed that laughing at any person’s joke is a sign of submissiveness. They were therefore worried that women would get the wrong idea and start to think they were equal to men, or perhaps better than them, if they laughed at women’s jokes.
“It makes me feel bad about myself if a woman is funnier than me,” said one of the men who participated in this study. “And if she’s really funny, then it takes an awful lot of effort not to laugh, and that’s just more work than I want to do on a date,” he continued.
RPT contacted a female comedian to ask her thoughts about these findings, “Well, I don’t really give a fuck,” she told RPT. “I like to date funny women. And yeah, I laugh at their jokes and they laugh at mine. In fact, just the other day my girlfriend told me this hilarious joke about evolutionary psychologists doing heteronormative research on dating preferences.” RPT pressed her to explain, and she continued, “How many evolutionary psychologists does it take to screw in a lightbulb? Three; one to screw it, one to make out-of-pocket comments about how satisfying the screwing must be for the socket, and the third to conduct a survey of undergrads that excludes homosexuals.”
